. PRUMC Mission Sewing Guild | Sewing with a Mission
The new Mission Sewing Guild is proud to be an active, ongoing part of PRUMC outreach. This creative group makes handmade clothing and blankets for distribution by our global mission teams. This guild encompasses all levels of creativity and skill. From beginner to seasoned expert, we all enjoy good fun for a great cause!
The idea for a sewing guild came from a Great Day of Service Project that makes baby blankets and gowns for Grady Hospital. Betty Feezor and Lynn Banks wanted to create something practical for the Nation of Georgia mission team to take to the children they serve, and the idea came to life.
The sewing for the summer of 2011 is dedicated to the Country of Georgia. PRUMC supports six children’s institutions in Georgia. Our goal is to supply each institution’s clinic with twelve small quilts (one for each exam room) as well as flannel baby blankets and gowns. For the kitchens, we will make 28 heavy duty aprons. Caps, mittens, scarves, booties/socks and other small items are in the making for the adults and children.
We are working with the current team leaders for Nicaragua, Kenya, Georgia and Honduras to determine their needs, and decide on our next several projects. The fellowship, sharing of experience and desire to serve has made this a fulfilling - and productive - group! Roseanne Street, has already made 320+ small dolls for the children of Georgia. Nell Snavely is well on her way to her goal of 50 crocheted caps. Louise Drane has been invaluable for getting the most from our materials by placing our patterns in the most economical way. Carol Turrentine, Betty Feezor, Stacy Taylor-Sallis, Sara McGaughy and Julie Gohring are all making quilts. We have other knitting and crochet items coming in at each meeting.
We hold an open meeting twice a month in the PRUMC Recreation Sewing Room to work as a group. The sewing room is fully stocked and you are invited to drop by any time between 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm on our meeting day to learn more and participate! Meeting dates will be listed online and in the Sunday worship bulletin.
