Peachtree Road's Mission Possible Team helps homeless persons get back on their feet and return to society working and living on their own.  Throughout the week, volunteers come to the church and meet with homeless men and women to provide options that help change their lives.

In order to enter the Mission Possible Program, candidates must fill out a questionnaire and be interviewed. Once accepted, their housing is provided at the Salvation Army for 12 weeks as well as support with transportation, meals, clothing, hygiene and other basic necessities.

The Full Story
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels.
Hebrews 13:2

Mission Possible is dedicated to “providing hope and new beginnings to disadvantaged individuals seeking a fresh start through partnership with Peachtree Road volunteers and God’s Grace.”  Clients who genuinely seek a fresh start come weekly by appointment on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday morning.  They meet with their Mission Possible Team to look for solutions to problems that prevent them from getting work and living independently.  Clients with a history of substance abuse must have a sponsor and must attend recovery programs.  Short and longer term goals are agreed upon and reviewed at each meeting.

Volunteers and clients agree upon and put in writing tasks that each will do.  Examples of these “weekly assignments” for clients are to make a doctor’s appointment, to quit smoking, to get a haircut, to account for how they spend money, to apply for hourly jobs, and to put together information for a resume.  Weekly assignments for volunteers might be to investigate housing opportunities through PRUMC contacts, to write a resume, to check job postings online, to create a form to record spending and begin a budget. Volunteers are also here to remind clients of their strengths, cheer for their successes, look for alternatives when doors don’t open, chastise clients if their assignments aren’t done, and live for the day when the client leaves because Mission Possible has become Mission Accomplished.

Mission Possible clients come from several sources – from people who come to our open door homeless assistance program, from recommendations from PRUMC’s contacts at the Salvation Army and Eden Village (a temporary residential community for homeless women and children), and by word of mouth. All potential clients fill out a 4-page application and undergo a full background check. At present, we have about 20 Mission Possible clients and 12 volunteers.

Do you want to help with Mission Possible?  The following items would make a huge difference to our ministry:
  • A used laptop computer
  • Pro bono time from an attorney to advise on misdemeanors,
    housing regulations, and employment law.
  • $5 gift cards at fast food restaurants. In winter, a homeless person
can get warm and stay a bit if he/she buys something.
If you could help with these items or wish to volunteer for Mission Possible, please contact Beth Spencer or Anne French.
