A Graduation Blessing

Eternal and Gracious God, we give thanks for this day and all it represents to those gathered here, and those who are not gathered here but whose spirit and love are profoundly present. We pray your blessing upon these your children who are graduating this week:

Bless them, dear God, with wisdom when they are inclined to be smart
Bless them with courage when they are inclined to be brave
Bless them with silence when they are inclined to speak
Bless them with speech when they are inclined to be silent
Bless them with humility when they are inclined to be self-righteous
Bless them with compassion when they are inclined to be judgmental
Bless them with openness when they are inclined to be prejudiced
Bless them with generosity when they are inclined to be miserly
Bless them with perseverance when they are inclined to give up
Bless them with faithfulness when they are inclined to forget you

And, dear God, bless them with the awareness that you have already blessed them with all these gifts, theirs is but to use them. Amen.

A blessing inspired by one offered by Bishop Woodie W. White upon the 2010 graduates of Candler School of Theology.
