Assurance and Celebration!

August 13, 2021

Dear Peachtree Road Family,

I hope you are well. I currently am on my way back from a week at the Bay View Association in Northern Michigan. I had a great time preaching and lecturing at this historic Methodist campground that was founded in 1875. The people were wonderfully hospitable, and it has been a good week.

On Sunday, our associate minister Elizabeth Byrd will be preaching as we continue with the third message in our series entitled “Methodists Believe in Assurance…” John Wesley taught that assurance is a gift from the Holy Spirit that leads us to “know that we know that we know” that we are the children of God. Not only will assurance be the subject of Elizabeth’s sermon, but it also will be the thread that runs through our singing and praying on Sunday. I hope you will make your plans to participate in worship either in person in the sanctuary at 8:30 am or 11:15 am or online at 11:15 am here.

The following Sunday (August 22), we have a special service planned for the End of Summer Celebration and Promotion Sunday. This is designated as “Come Home to Peachtree Road” day, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to church. Our elementary children will be promoted to the next grade of Sunday School, the youth ministry will welcome new sixth graders to the Harp Student Center, and many of our adult classes will begin meeting again in person. This will be a special day as we consider what Methodists believe about heaven, hear “heavenly music” by our choir, and enjoy a fellowship luncheon of barbeque and all the fixings provided at no charge to the congregation by the church.

I hope you also are making plans to join us for Fall Kick-off Sunday on September 12, as we launch several new initiatives in hospitality. Not only are you encouraged to attend worship on this day, but we also hope you will invite a friend, neighbor, or relative to join you as we begin an emphasis on hospitality. All are welcome at Peachtree Road as we consider ways we are “Bridging the Gap” with our neighbors.

Please make note of two new worship opportunities that will begin in the fall:

  • 10:00 am worship in the Moore Chapel – Beginning on Sunday, September 12, we will launch a new worship service in the Moore Chapel. This 10:00 am service is designed to help those families who currently are not participating in either of our morning worship services and might like to have their children in Sunday School while they are in worship. This new time provides us with the added benefit of creating additional adult Sunday School classes in the future without having to construct more rooms. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated every Sunday at this service, and I hope you will help us spread the word.
  • Westside Table – Beginning September 19, our second campus (known as the Westside Table) will begin to hold worship services each Sunday at 11:00 am in space we are renting at Roundtop Brewery on the Westside of Midtown. This is an under-served but fast-growing part of our city, and this second campus gives us an opportunity to have a greater impact in the name of Christ. Daniel Ogle is the campus pastor, and Amy Little leads the worship team. We are in the process of recruiting about 50-75 persons from Peachtree Road who will volunteer to be “missionaries” to the Westside for about 18 months. If this is something you might be interested in doing, please contact Daniel Ogle at On September 12, I will issue an invitation at the close of worship for those who will help us launch the new campus to come to the altar for a prayer of blessing. This will mark a significant new beginning for our church.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that Jordan Black will be returning to our Children’s Ministry staff. Jordan served on our staff as an associate director in children’s ministry for 7 years before devoting her full-time efforts to The Matthew Initiative, a nonprofit she and her mother created to support local churches in developing strong children’s ministries. Jordan is joining our staff as an associate director and will have specific responsibilities in developing and overseeing the Sunday worship experience for our elementary children as well as providing support to our children’s ministry director Martha Christopher in other areas. We are delighted to welcome Jordan back to Peachtree Road!Well, that’s it for this week. I am about to get back on the road and continuing my journey south to Atlanta. Please do not hesitate to call on me if you need me.

Grace and peace,
