Westside Chapter 1!

Our Westside Story, Chapter 1: Teacher Giftcard Giveaway!
Thanks to your generous donations and support, PRUMC began the first chapter of Our Westside Story this week with a School Box gift card giveaway. The giveaway was part of a “Meet and Greet” dinner held for the teachers, administrators, staff, and partners of the soon-to-launch Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy hosted by Spelman College. The energy in the room swelled as attendees shared the excitement of plans for the year ahead and learned more about Hollis’s new Experiential Learning (EL) curriculum. Friends were made and partnerships were born, including a special sustainability alliance between the PRUMC Green Team and Chick-Fil-A Foundation!

There were many favorite moments in an evening filled with promise. A highlight for our team was certainly handing out $250 gift cards to each of the 35 Hollis Academy teachers. On average, teachers spend more than $500 per year of their own income to supplement school supplies on behalf of their students. We knew these cards would impact the classroom but were blown away by the outpouring of joy and gratitude from recipients and attendees alike. Their exuberance made Beth Spencer, Diane Scanlan and our Westside team feel like Oprah Winfrey! It is a blessing to be part of this incredible Westside initiative with so many committed community leaders and organizations. Thank you again PRUMC for the outpouring of love and support you have shown since we launched Our Westside Story. The first chapter could not have been written without your generosity. Stay tuned for Chapter 2 and details on how you can continue to help create a space “where hope meets opportunity.”

Giveaway Impact
Well, you [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Beth Spencer] and PRUMC are definitely the talk around Hollis! So many teachers expressed their feelings of gratitude and wonderful “shock” that they felt last night. Did you see how they “strutted” up front when their names were called? I know some of these people personally and I have never seen them light up like that before. Teachers are generally humble people, but everyone wants to be recognized and feel appreciated. You really accomplished that last night. So now we all know how it feels to be a part of one of Oprah’s Ultimate Giveaways!

I know we are working on a few projects right now, so we will be in deeper discussion on those things soon. But since I am still reeling from last night, I just wanted to reach out to say THANK YOU SO MUCH from the bottom of my heart for all that you and the PRUMC family are doing for Hollis!Upenda Dubose, Hollis Partnerships Program Manager
