The Courage to Suffer

“I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.”  John 12:46

This is a comforting and challenging text from John. There is the reassurance that God will help move us from those dark periods in our life.  Yet, it is clear that the darkness will be a part of our lives.  How do we face the inevitability and work through our fears, knowing these times will come?

Brene Brown writes, “It is only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness that we will we discover the infinite power of our light.”  To be vulnerable with ourselves and God is to be courageous.  When we allow ourselves to feel the sadness, anger or loneliness, we discover the richness of the experience.  God is with us in the darkness and walks with us in the light.

Questions for Reflection:
Do you find it difficult to be vulnerable?
How do you find your way out of the dark times?
How did you move past the fear to move forward?

God of light, we want to know ourselves, just as you know us.  As we go through the dark times, may we find the richness through our courage.
