August 2, 2019
Dear Peachtree Road Family,
I hope this note finds you well. I also hope you are making your plans to be in worship this Sunday as we begin a new sermon series entitled “The DNA of a Methodist.” With the advent of “23andMe” and other DNA ancestry services, we are witnessing an exponential growth in the interest in genealogy. That got me to wondering: what about your spiritual genealogy? Have you ever considered how your spiritual inheritance as a Methodist Christian informs your life? What does it mean to be people of the “warm heart” or to live a life of both inward and outward holiness? During the month of August we’ll consider what it means to be of Wesleyan descent:
August 4 | Psalm 42:1-5 | Longing for Holiness
August 11 | Romans 12:1-2 | The Warm Heart
August 18 | Romans 5:6-11 | Pursuing Grace
August 25 | Romans 8:31-39 | Knocking on Heaven’s Door
Through these next four Sundays, you’ll discover how you can experience revival in your own life – the kind of revival that brings blessed assurance. I hope you will join your friends at Peachtree Road for worship each week as we consider our spiritual inheritance.
On Sunday we also will celebrate the ministry of our Young Adults here at Peachtree Road. We are blessed with a vibrant group of young professionals who actively participate in the ministry of our church. In worship we will highlight this ministry and celebrate their leadership in our church. Lindsey Rogers, Young Adult Council Chairperson, will share a word of testimony, and several of our young adults will be assisting in serving the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the 11:15 am service. If you are new to the community and have not found your place of connection yet, I encourage you to consider the young adult ministry at Peachtree Road. I am grateful to our associate minister Leslie Watkins for her leadership in coordinating this vital ministry.
As we come to the end of summer, I want to remind you that now is the time to sign up for fall Bible study. One of the finest studies to come along during my ministry has been Disciple Bible Study. Many of you already have been a part of Disciple, but there is a new study out that is designed for those with a very busy schedule – Disciple Fast Track. Instead of the marathon run of 34 weeks of study with 2.5 hours each week of class time, the course has been streamlined – 12 weeks studying the Old Testament in the fall and 12 weeks in the spring studying the New Testament. If you have not taken Disciple before because of the time commitment, I would suggest you strongly consider Disciple Fast Track. And, even if you have participated in Disciple before, why not take a refresher course beginning this fall?
In addition, we will be offering a number of other opportunities to help you meet others and grow in your faith:
- Jesus in the Gospels
- Made for More
- Scriptural Conversations for People on the Go
- Grief Share
- Financial Peace
- Journey Together: The Beatitudes
- Stepping Stones: Upper Room Disciplines
- The Life and Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
- Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others
- What Shall We Say? Evil, Suffering, and the Crisis of Faith
- Blessed, Even When…
- Writing as a Spiritual Practice
- Visit the Holy Land without Leaving Home
- Morning Men’s Fellowship Group
- Friday Morning Men’s Bible Study
- More Than Sparrows Women’s Study
- Morning Light Women’s Bible Study
Thank you for all you are doing through the ministry of this great church. I look forward to seeing you Sunday as we explore our faith as Methodists.
