Friends of Music

At Peachtree Road, we believe that the arts are an intrinsic part of our church experience. The expression and sharing of our gifts is a magnificent way to glorify God! We are fortunate to be a strong advocate for the arts in the greater Atlanta area and we invite you to be a part of our mission.

MISSION

The Arts have always played an important role in the life of the Church, and have a biblical, historical and theological precedence for doing so. The nurturing of the Arts within a faith setting provides a strong stimulus for people to attend a wide variety of events such as concerts, recitals, special services, and entertainment offerings.

The Friends of Music Patron Program enters its seventh year of supporting The Arts Program and Peachtree Road. Through the Friends of Music (“FOM”) initiatives, we are able to continue fulfilling our mission of:

  • Offering the finest possible musical occasions in our annual concert series, including sponsoring concerts by nationally and internationally renowned ensembles
  • Expanding the understanding and value of music
  • Supporting the music ministry in all they do to help lead worship services in our great church
  • Financially supporting and facilitating these initiatives
  • Through the generosity and faithful support of the Friends of Music, we can expand this tradition of excellence and the arts will thrive at Peachtree Road for many seasons to come.

Spain’s Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is one of the revered “thin places” of the world, a shrine where the border between earth and heaven is felt to disappear. Since the ninth century, pilgrims have followed an ancient route leading from France to the cathedral shrine holding the body of St. James (Santiago) and extending beyond to Finisterre, “the end of the earth” on the western coast of Spain.

British composer Joby Talbot’s a cappella tour-de-force Path of Miracles follows the journey along the Camino between four of the major staging posts on the route as an expression of the individual pilgrim’s experience. The mystical and epic work reflects the physical and spiritual progress of the pilgrim, referring to the multitude of stories of saints, miracles, and traditions associated with the route. It evokes shrines to pilgrim-martyrs, ancient hospices, the pilgrim’s passport, and the symbolic burning of a piece of clothing at Finisterre to symbolize renunciation of the pilgrim’s old life.

ANNUAL CONCERT SERIES

For decades, Peachtree Road has offered a multitude of opportunities for music lovers through its annual concert series. Sponsoring nationally and internationally renowned ensembles in recent years, however, has been made possible through the financial support of FRIENDS OF MUSIC (“Friends”). The Tallis Scholars, Seraphic Fire and Chanticleer’s recent performances represent the high-quality Friends strives to achieve each year. Other annual performances and community favorites include the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival, the Three Choirs Festival (featuring Georgia State University Singers, UGA’s Hodgson Singers, and Emory’s Concert Choir) and several offerings from our ensemble in residence, the Georgia Boy Choir.

Friends also support our Chancel Choir’s presentations of seasonal and sacred choral masterworks with full orchestra that exceed the normal bounds of Peachtree Road’s rich liturgical life. From the Many Moods of Christmas to “The Crown: Music from the Coronation,” our choir enriches the musical repertoire available to the church and community at large and contributes to the ongoing musical heritage of Peachtree Road.

WORSHIP

In addition to musical excellence in our weekly worship services, we celebrate Festival Worship with guest soloists and orchestra several times a year, including: Palm Sunday, Easter Day, Music and Arts Sunday, Celebration of Freedom, Harvest Sunday and Christmas Eve. Our annual Feast of All Saints: Choral Evensong is a unique service of prayers and praises offered by the choir for our entire faith community.

Exquisite Music in a Divine Space
Peachtree Road is known as one of the top places in the country to hear heavenly music. It is our beautiful sanctuary, incredible acoustics and magnificent organs that together provide a unique worship experience for both artists and listeners. Friends support needed renovations, purchases, and special projects that maintain our instruments and venue. For example, Friends funds underwrote recent repairs to our Schantz chapel organ and the acquisition of a Van Daalen continuo organ that provides the intimate sound required for music performed in many of our concerts and services. As part of its mission, Friends of Music sponsors concerts by nationally and internationally renowned ensembles.
